We reached to the Hortus Botanicus by public transportation easily. Especially if you got lost, you can discover most of the existing places in surroundings of De Hortus:). One of the existing places in here is the "Albert Cuyp market" on Albert Cuypstraat in Amsterdam. Tourists don’t commonly visit this well kept local secret. The other attractive place is the "Artis Zoo". Artis is a fascinating zoo. In an area of 14 hectares around 700 species of animals provide a magnificent overview of the entire animal kingdom. Although the hortus is small in size, there are more than 6,000 plants.

The parts of the garden are butterfly greenhouse, three-climate greenhouse, palmhouse, snippendaal garden, semicircle, crown jewels, tree, outdoor garden. When you entire in the garden, you feel that garden is too small to be a botanic garden. But while you are strolling around, you see lots of exiting plants and gardens. Especially the butterfly greenhouse is the most attractive part of the garden. I haven't seen a greenhouse like that one.

In The Three-climate Greenhouse There are three parts: Subtropical, tropical and warm, dry desert area. The Cape 'Fijnbos' in the subtropical section of the three-climate greenhouse represents one of the vegetation types found in South Africa. Although the Amsterdam Hortus is specialized in South African plants, you will also find some plants from Australia in this area. In the warm, dry desert area, you will find a variety of cacti and other succulents, including the bizarre Welwitschia from Namibia and the impressive quiver trees. The tropical section of the greenhouse strongly resembles a real jungle. Many plant species grow profusely in this warm, humid climate.
